To quote Sarah:”As some of you already know, for quite some time I’ve been working on a fascinating and personally rewarding project to document the roles of animals during The Great War. I’m now delighted to be able to unveil the first two paintings in a whole series, which I hope eventually to exhibit as a full set, telling not only the story of horses and dogs, but also that of my own grandfather. These two pieces will also be featured on commemoration mugs, soon to be available at most major UK tourist attractions. I have innumerable people to thank for helping me with this project, not least Andy Biggar for approaching me with the idea (and the client!), Laura Cardwell for allowing me to use her beautiful horse Pops as model, Di Woolley for photo-shoot location, Tony Radcliffe for modelling as my Cheshire soldier along with Ed Wilson (who will feature in future paintings!).Also for their invaluable technical assistance with horse tack and general support, I must also thank in particular my fellow artists, the lovely Amy Goodman, Ali Bannister and Heather Jane Warburton, along with photographer Chris Birtwell from The Kings Troop, RHA… Lots of other people have given me tea and sympathy throughout. You know who you are!”
