CHRONOLOGY   The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co – 1880 – 1898. The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd – from 1898 amalgamated with Garrard & Co – 1952. These table lighters were originally used in British Regimental Military Messes, and this rare type, imitating a Hunting Horn from a Fox or Stag Hunt, at Hunt Dinners and Balls. This example is large, at 7 1/2″ inches high, and is in excellent condition, with no sign of damage or repair, and no engraving. The lighter body is filled with spirit or lamp oil, and the flame finial holds a wick which is placed inside the body and the finial screw top replaced. In use the wick is lit and remains burning gently, to light your cigar, directly or with a spill.

These formal cigar lighters are still used in Britain at traditional military and naval mess dinners, and in the finest and most elegant of the London gentlemen’s clubs.
